Creditors, employers, insurance companies and landlords can see your credit report and with
a free online credit check, you can too. And because what's in your credit record can have an
important impact on your life, it's become increasingly necessary to be able to review it. So
when you make your free online credit check, be sure to check the information for errors or
omissions.
Credit report agencies and others who provide the information in your free online credit
check follow procedures for handling your credit files as established by the Fair Credit
Reporting Act(FCRA). The FCRA also specifies the rights you have regarding the use and
maintenance of your credit information.
Access to the information found in your free online credit check is limited to only those
with a legitimate business reason or government requirement. If the request for your credit
report is for employment or for medical information purposes, your written consent is required.
Your most basic credit right is the right to see what's in your credit report. You also have
the right to dispute information contained in your report. If you find an error in your free
online credit check, you should contact the credit bureau to have it corrected. After you contact
the bureau, it must investigate and resolve all legitimate disputes, usually within 30 days. If
the credit bureau can't verify the information within the time allowed, the disputed item is
either removed or corrected.
If an error you find in your free online credit check isn't corrected to your satisfaction,
you may write a 100-word summary of your position. This statement will be included in
future copies of your credit report. And if a disputed item is removed and then later verified
and put back, you must be notified of this action.
