Secure Your Rights by Getting Credit Reports Free

When you get credit reports free you don't get just a record of your credit, you also get a number of legal rights. Since credit records have become increasingly important in our daily life, numerous laws have been enacted to establish your rights to fair credit treatment. And getting credit reports free allow you to make sure that your credit record is accurate and your rights are being upheld.

When you get credit reports free, the information you see comes from consumer reporting agencies, usually called credit bureaus. The same businesses who request your credit report are the same ones which supply the information that goes in your report. And if you get a loan, insurance, a job or rental housing, your credit report will probably be checked. Your report also includes information from public records showing if you've been involved in a lawsuit, judgment, tax lien or went bankrupt.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act was written to help keep credit reports free from errors and omissions. It ensures that if you have a credit record, you have the following rights:

  • The right to get a current copy of your credit report.
  • The right to know who was given a copy of your report in the last year or two years if it was an employer.
  • If a company denies your application based on the information in your credit report, they must give you the name and address of the credit bureau that supplied the report.
  • And when your credit applications are denied, you also have the right to get credit reports free from the bureaus that supplied the reports.
  • If you dispute information in your report, both the reporting agency and the supplier of the information must investigate the item.
  • And if a disputed item isn't resolved satisfactorily, you have the right to have a 100-word explanation included in your credit report.
In addition to the rights provided by the FCRA, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act establishes your rights when applying for credit. Creditors are prohibited from denying credit on the basis of age, sex, race, religion, national origin, marital status or for being a welfare recipient. And if you're denied credit, you have a legal right to know the specific reason.
